At AFAH we believe that PREVENTION is the key to your pet’s long term health.
Examinations
Younger pets should have a full physical exam annually. Older pets should come for an exam once every six months and sooner if a problem arises.
Vaccinations
Our vaccination protocol is customized to each pet’s personal exposure and risk. We educate our clients about the various vaccinations available and then determine if the benefits of inoculation outweigh the risks. Routine vaccines for dogs include: Rabies, Distemper combo (distemper, parvovirus, adenovirus, hepatitis, and parainfluenza), Leptospirosis, Lyme, and Bordetella (Kennel Cough vaccine). Routine vaccines for cats include Rabies, Distemper combo (Panleukopenia, Calici, and Rhinotracheitis), and Leukemia.
Deworming and Fecal Checks
Parasitic zoonoses are diseases caused by parasites. While we normally associate parasites, such as roundworms, tapeworms, and hookworms with cats and dogs, people can accidentally be infected with the same parasites. Regular deworming is the best way to prevent parasitic disease and the transmission of intestinal parasites from pets to people. It also prevents the shedding of parasite eggs, which contaminate yards or any place a pet defecates.
We recommend that every pet receive two rounds of broad spectrum deworming at least once annually. The two rounds are set three weeks apart. Puppies, kittens, and pets that test positive for internal parasites may require several rounds of deworming.
Routine Bloodwork
All kittens should be tested for Feline Leukemia and Feline Immunodefiency Virus (FIV). This test should be repeated annually for all cats that have previously tested positive, go outdoors, or have symptoms.
Lyme and other tick borne diseases are prevalent in Loudoun County. We also see a number of heartworm positive dogs. For this reason, all dogs should be tested annually with the Heartworm 3DX Combo test, which tests for the presence of Heartworm, Lyme, and Erhlichia infections.
We also recommend comprehensive bloodwork annually for all pets over the age of seven.
Preventative Medications
We recommend that all dogs be on yearly prevention for heartworm, fleas, and ticks. We also recommend flea and tick prevention for cats. We sell a variety of preventatives and would be happy to help you determine which is best for your companion.

Your pet's health is just as important as your own. A pet's diet, the biggest health variable controlled by its caregiver, is crucial to its well-being. With so many different pet food products to choose from, it has become increasingly difficult to determine which pet foods are actually "healthy" for your pet.
Dogs and cats are healthiest when they eat the whole, natural foods we would eat ourselves: USDA-inspected chicken, turkey, and lamb, whole grain rice and barley, fresh fruits and vegetables, and Grade A dairy products.
By eliminating the cheap filler ingredients and low-grade proteins that are so common in commercial pet foods, the main foods that we sell are more dense and richer in nutrients without added bulk. This means that your pet gets more nutrition from less food, with calories and fats in each formula balanced to fit the needs of your specific dog or cat.
At AFAH we offer the highest quality dry and wet cat and dog foods available. We have several prescription diets available for pets with proven food allergies and specific medial conditions. We offer a variety of treats and chews for pets with special nutritional requirements.
We also understand how difficult it can be to maintain your pet’s weight. We offer free weight checks and a variety of dietary foods depending on your pet’s needs.

Just like humans’, pets’ dental problems begin with plaque, a soft sticky residue that hardens over time into tarter. Tarter build up leads to gum infections, loss of teeth, painful abscesses in the mouth and can contribute to heart and kidney disease.
Our doctors will check your pet’s teeth at their annual exam to determine if a dental is needed. If you notice that your pet has bad breath or is having trouble eating you may bring your pet into the hospital any time at no charge to have a technician examine your pet’s mouth and to determine if a dental is necessary.
Many dogs and cats need to have their teeth professionally cleaned as they get older. When your pet needs to have a dental cleaning, a general anesthesia is used so that the doctor can do a thorough exam and cleaning. Blood work will be required before the dental to detect any underlying conditions. The dental procedure includes: cleaning, scaling, polishing, sub-gingival curettage, flushing and a fluoride treatment. If the doctor has had to remove any teeth, or has observed signs of infection, antibiotics may be sent home. Once your pet’s teeth are cleaned, home care and regular dental checks are strongly recommended to maintain good oral hygiene.
