Vicki John, LVT
Licensed Veterinary Technician
Vicki joined the AFAH team as a Veterinary Technician in January, 2003. She has eight years of experience working in animal hospitals and ample surgical assisting skills.
This Northern Virginia native graduated from Robinson Secondary School in Fairfax, Virginia in 1998. She also attended the Chantilly Animal Science program concurrently, from which she received the 1997-1998 Outstanding Student Award. After graduation, she attended NOVA’s Veterinary Technology Program and received her Associates Degree in 2002. Shortly thereafter, she passed the Virginia State Boards to become a Licensed Veterinary Technician. Vicki further refined her surgical skills while working for a local surgical referral group just prior to joining our team.
Vicki has chosen veterinary medicine as a career because she has always had the desire to do so. As a child, she was fascinated with the biology of her own pets. When her pet hamsters and guinea pigs would become ill, she would insist on understanding the underlying medical issues and try diligently to heal them. In addition to natural curiosity, Vicki has found that she enjoys being part of a process that educates pet owners and strengthens the human-pet bond. “I couldn’t imagine doing anything else. I love that I can make a difference in the lives of animals and their caretakers. This is the career I was meant to do,” she admits.
Vicki shares her home with two dogs (Haven and Linden) and one cat (Fly). Haven has her own story click here to read more here. Linden, too, has achieved hall of fame status. He was brought into the clinic as a stray in the worst condition imaginable. He was emaciated, lethargic, and covered in fleas. Maybe it is the Florence Nightingale Syndrome, but Vicki fell in love with her patient and decided to call little Linden her own. Shortly after Vicki proclaimed “he’s mine”, he actually died on our treatment table for several minutes! Dr. Laubinger and our team of assistants (including Vicki), were able to bring him back to life and nurse him back to health. Then there is Fly, another rescue. He is a fluffy flame point cat that is polydactyl (extra toes) and very handsome. Nobody can deny that he is a good lookin’ cat!
